Why do we need art? How can we improve the quality of our lives?

Art is important... we all know that. So why do we constantly have to remind ourselves of this and explain it to new generations?
Art is not a luxury.
The arts are a fundamental aspect of our humanity and collective progress, and are vital if we are to develop and nurture a positive society.

Why do we need art?
Below are the fundamental and key reasons. But, of course, the list goes on and on.
1. Culture and traditions
Culture consists of customs, social interaction, and activities.
But how does culture feed? Art!
Whether it is music, dance, or the visual arts, culture and art are inseparable.

Through art, we shape our cultural identity, values, and beliefs. It is art that helps preserve and popularize cultural heritage and helps future generations understand and appreciate it.
Art is a window into the past, allowing us to study and understand historical contexts and cultural changes. It helps preserve historical memory and contributes to a better understanding of the present and the past.
Through art, we can share stories and experiences, and this contributes to the development of compassion and understanding between different generations and cultures.
Art and human history go hand in hand. That's why people devote their lives to studying cave art, Shakespeare's plays, and much more.
Through the art created in the past, we can learn about other generations and eras, what those who came before us faced, how they lived, and what they did. Likewise, future generations will learn about the events of our time through the art we leave behind. Looking at the art of the past helps us understand who we are as people.
Where we put our energy and efforts now will affect what our future will look like. In its campaign for the arts, the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts stated: "The values we support today will determine what we have when it's all over."
This is a time to appreciate art. Whether it's big or small, a chalk drawing on the sidewalk or a mural on a wall, art changes the way we live.

2. Social unity
Art has the power to bring people together and create social bonds. It is often the arts that provide a common ground for people from different backgrounds to interact with each other, share experiences, and develop empathy and understanding.

Art evokes emotions, challenges perceptions, and sparks conversations. Public art installations, murals and street art can serve as a catalyst for discussion and bring people together. They can create a sense of community and provide a shared experience for people from different backgrounds.
So, just imagine - we get a group of people together. Add to that a little drawing, painting, crafts, music, dancing... and that's it! We get an incredible transformation of an ordinary day into something special.
Public projects that engage people in the creation of art foster a sense of belonging and pride. It's about how art and creativity can bring people together and create new meanings and memories that will stay with us for a long time. This is the magic of culture and art.
Art allows us to express ourselves and at the same time find common ground with others.

3. Economic value

The arts industry contributes to the economy through job creation, tourism, and the sale of artistic and cultural products. Arts organizations and artists also play a vital role in community development, revitalizing cities, villages, and entire countries by stimulating local economies.
The United States' arts and cultural industries generated a total economic value added of 13.7% in 2021, surpassing the growth of the nation's overall economy. This sector's industries, which bring in billions of dollars for the national economy, include web publishing, streaming services, traditional and programmatic publishing, art retail, and non-governmental museums. These industries have all shown growth.
People do not always realize the economic impact of the arts. While economic data can be persuasive in private discussions with decision-makers, broader public advocacy can benefit from presenting the arts as a public good that enriches community life and individual well-being beyond simple economic indicators.
Art makes our lives better and helps us all feel good, not just for the sake of money.

4. Analysis and critique

Art can be a powerful tool for raising awareness of social and political issues. Through their work, artists shed light on important topics often ignored by the media and turn art into a form of protest and activism.
People can increase awareness, start a conversation about significant topics like social justice, human rights, and inequality through the medium of art. Art serves as a social mirror, reflecting the attitudes, convictions, and actions of the community.
People can use it as a vehicle for activism or protest, using their artistic expression to express their disapproval and call for change.
 5. Self-development and art therapy

Self-expression, self-awareness, and the development of emotional intelligence are all fostered by art. Creating or consuming art helps to develop creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.
As humans, we are naturally drawn to art as a form of self-expression and communication. Kids love to draw, sing, and dance. For them, it is a way of expressing themselves even before they start talking.
In fact, participating in the arts can even help children develop language, motor skills, and visual perception. Studies show that young people who regularly engage in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement in the future.
In a therapeutic setting, art also provides an opportunity to go deeper into oneself and express emotions that are difficult to discuss.
Art therapy, in particular, is recognized as an effective way to improve mental health. Through drawing, sculpture, or other art forms, people can work on their psychological traumas, find peace, and improve their emotional well-being. Art allows us to rethink our internal conflicts and provides an opportunity for deep reflection and understanding.

In one important study, children aged six to 12 were asked to draw a house to distract themselves after thinking about something that upset them. This group was able to improve their mood compared to children who were asked to draw a negative event or simply copy another drawing.
Thus, art not only enriches our cultural environment and inspires creativity but also plays a key role in maintaining our mental health and promoting comprehensive self-development.

6. How art can improve the quality of your life

Art creates meaning and helps us understand our world. Scientific studies have shown that consuming art improves our quality of life and makes us happier. When we create art, we lift our spirits, improve our problem-solving abilities, and open our minds to new ideas.
Professor Semir Zeki, a neuroscientist at University College London, says that when we look at great art, our brains are stimulated in the same way as when we fall in love. Art increases the level of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps control the reward and pleasure centers in the brain.
That's why it's so important to invest in art and bring it into your home.

It is vital for us as humans to surround ourselves with other people's artistic creations. It introduces us to completely new experiences and ideas that we may have never seen before.
When you invest in a piece of art, you are investing in a visual story that will grace your walls. Almost every work of art has a story behind it because nothing is created in a vacuum. In fact, it is part of the artist's life.
We love the murals we pass on our way to our favorite coffee shop; they don't just decorate our route; they fill the streets with art and add a special flavor to the cities, and they energize us and awaken our thoughts and feelings.
When you buy art, you bring this energy into your home.
This unique energy can transform a home, inspiring you every day. Buying art is not just an investment in a physical object, but a contribution to your own environment that reflects your tastes, values and meanings.
At Arts.center, we continuously update and moderate our articles to ensure the relevance and usefulness of the information for our audience.
